Gates & pens

Create a boundary that fits your home.

A gate changes access to an existing room. A pen creates a smaller area inside a room. Choose the layout first, then check the dog, opening and installation. A barrier that fits a doorway can still be the wrong choice for the dog using it.

1. Opening measured at actual mounting points 2. Exact extension configuration supports that width 3. Mounting/drilling permission confirmed

TypeWhen to consider itThe tradeoff
Hardware-mounted gateA fixed boundary when appropriate mounting is permitted and the structure matches the installation instructions.Requires suitable fixings and careful installation. A stair use claim must apply to the exact gate and installation, not just the brand.
Pressure-mounted gateA doorway option where the manufacturer permits the mounting arrangement and the dog does not force or jump the barrier. Some models require fixed wall cups despite being called pressure-mounted. Threshold bars can create a trip point. Do not substitute one for a top-of-stairs gate.
Exercise penA defined floor area when you want several panels around a resting or activity space.Panel height alone is not containment. Dogs can climb, push or move panels; the assembled footprint and floor stability matter.

Measure the complete opening

Measure where the gate will actually mount, including differences between the top and bottom of the opening. Record baseboards, banisters, uneven walls and door swing. Compare the exact included extensions, not the widest range advertised across every accessory. Some configurations have gaps between supported widths: the Carlson model in our catalog, for example, is not a continuous 29–36.5-inch fit.

Treat stair installations separately

Choose a gate whose instructions explicitly permit the intended stair location. Check fixing points, direction of opening and any required stop or setback. Our planner removes pressure-mounted types for top-of-stairs use and will not recommend a mounted gate when you cannot drill. If the structure does not match the installation instructions, get the maker’s advice before improvising.

Plan a pen with tape first

Mark the proposed footprint on the floor. Allow extra room for the door, cleaning and people walking past. Decide where water and a resting spot would go and whether the layout can remain stable on that surface. A square footprint in a product listing does not prove that a different panel arrangement has the same usable area. Check the chosen layout before ordering.

Introduce the boundary while you are there

Observe whether your dog settles, pushes, paws, climbs or becomes distressed. Keep new barriers supervised while you learn how they are used. A dog that has already forced or escaped barriers needs an individual plan; raising the height is not a complete answer. Also consider other pets and children: small-pet openings and gaps can change who can get through.

Check it after everyday use

Inspect mounting points, latches, hinges and panel connectors. Confirm the gate is latched rather than assuming it has closed. Recheck installation after moving a pressure-mounted gate or rearranging a pen. Keep escape routes and everyday walkways clear, and follow the maker’s cleaning and tightening instructions.

Common questions

Does pressure-mounted mean no drilling?

Not necessarily. Read the installation instructions; some wall cups need screws. Unknown fixing requirements are not treated as a verified no-drill solution.

Will a taller pen stop an escape?

Height is only one factor. Climbing, pushing and distress require attention to the dog’s behavior and the whole setup.

Can I add any extension?

Use only extensions approved for that exact model and configuration. Recheck the supported range and instructions after adding one.
