Measure before choosing
Inside space answers “can my dog use it?” Outside space answers “can I put it here?” Both need checking.
- Measure nose to tail base, widest body point, and natural standing and sitting height in inches.
- Keep usable inside L × W × H separate from complete outside L × W × H; never substitute one for the other.
- Record bedding thickness and leave door, ventilation and walking access clear.
- Record assembled outside dimensions and collapsed dimensions as separate sets.
- Measure the storage opening, not just the space behind it, and check carrying weight.
Set up, inspect and clean
Inspect folding joints and latches before each reassembly. Confirm that all required parts lock into the assembled position. Keep the dog clear while folding or unfolding the frame.
Questions for this setup
Can I use collapsed dimensions to decide room placement?
No. Storage and in-use dimensions answer different questions. The dog needs the complete assembled space.
Is a folding kennel always easier to carry?
Check weight, handles and folded shape. Folding describes a mechanism, not how manageable the item will be for a particular person.
What if the divider or tray must be removed first?
Include those parts in the storage plan. Read the folding sequence for the exact model instead of forcing the frame around an attached accessory.
The folded package matters as much as the open footprint
Wire and soft-sided designs solve different problems. A folding wire crate can provide an open view and a removable tray. A soft design can be convenient for a dog that already settles calmly, but fabric and mesh should not be assumed to resist chewing or forceful escape attempts.
Check the sequence of setting up and taking down the crate. Look for the manufacturer’s locking steps, carrying method and instructions for any removable parts. Keep the dog outside during assembly and folding. A lightweight claim is less useful if the folded unit is still awkward for your storage space.
Start with the Frisco and MidWest folding ranges, then compare the EliteField or Top Paw soft designs if the dog and use fit. Carrying a crate easily does not establish that it is a protective vehicle restraint. Treat storage convenience, home use and crash protection as separate questions.
Our take
We would compare the packed dimensions and weight, not simply the word folding. A crate that is easy to store may still be a nuisance to carry up stairs or set up every evening.
What to compare
- Folded dimensions and carrying weight
- How the folded package is secured
- Assembly and locking steps
- Whether a soft enclosure suits the dog
Models discussed in this guide
Research comparisons, not hands-on test results or confirmation that a model fits your dog.
Source prices are shown from lower to higher within each model. Different sizes and configurations are not an exact-SKU savings comparison. Shipping, tax and checkout availability are excluded.

MidWest iCrate Single Door
We would compare the single-door iCrate when the crate will face an open part of the room and stay there. It gives you a direct alternative to paying for a second entrance you may never use.
What could make us pass: Check the selected version’s divider and tray details. The lowest family price may belong to a different size from the one your dog needs.

Frisco Single Door Fold and Carry Crate
This is a Frisco starting comparison for a straightforward home crate that may need to be folded between uses. We would choose one door when that layout already fits the routine.
What could make us pass: Check whether folding is practical for the selected size and what accessories are included. We would move to the double-door version only for a real access benefit.

Top Paw Portable Soft Crate
We see this as a second crate for a dog that already knows how to settle. It is worth comparing when putting the crate away is part of the routine, rather than leaving it set up all week.
What could make us pass: We would pass for a dog that scratches at fabric or pushes to get out. Confirm the packed dimensions before counting on it to solve a storage problem.

EliteField 3 Door Soft Crate
Three openings give us a useful question to ask of this soft crate: will more access make your temporary setup easier? We would compare it for a calm dog visiting places where the available space changes.
What could make us pass: Fabric remains the deciding limitation. Extra doors do not make it a sensible choice for a dog that claws, chews or forces an exit.
