Kennel buying guide

Kennels for air travel and what to verify before buying

Air-travel shopping begins with the airline and the planned journey. A product title that says airline approved is not confirmation that your airline will accept that kennel, that size or your dog on that flight. IATA’s traveler guidance is a useful starting point, followed by the carrier’s current requirements.

Measure before choosing

Inside space answers “can my dog use it?” Outside space answers “can I put it here?” Both need checking.

  1. Measure nose to tail base, widest body point, and natural standing and sitting height in inches.
  2. Keep usable inside L × W × H separate from complete outside L × W × H; never substitute one for the other.
  3. Record bedding thickness and leave door, ventilation and walking access clear.
  4. Obtain the airline’s requirements for the exact route, animal and carriage arrangement before buying.
  5. Record the animal measurements and bedding required by the applicable container-sizing instructions; do not reuse a home-only size calculation.

Set up, inspect and clean

Keep route and airline approval separate from a retailer’s travel label. Check hardware, ventilation, labels, food/water provisions and the final assembled container against the applicable requirements.

Questions for this setup

Does “airline approved” guarantee acceptance?

No. Confirm acceptance with the operating airline for the exact flight and container configuration.

Can I use the planner’s home allowance for a flight?

No. The planner compares home equipment. Air transport has its own container-sizing and acceptance requirements.

Where should I start?

Read IATA’s traveler guidance, then confirm the airline’s current process and requirements before making a purchase.

Get the carrier’s acceptance before treating a kennel as suitable

Decide which transport arrangement you are actually evaluating before comparing crates. A rigid kennel intended for an airline’s cargo or checked-pet process is a different purchase from an in-cabin carrier. Confirm the applicable dimensions, construction and documentation directly with the airline.

The Petmate Sky and Vari ranges and SportPet plastic travel kennel are useful catalog options to investigate. Examine the exact model and size rather than a family-level starting price. Review door hardware, ventilation, fasteners and required accessories against the carrier’s instructions; do not assume accessories shown in a photograph are included.

Make acceptance a condition of the purchase, especially for bulky products with expensive return shipping. The best deal is not a lower price on a crate you cannot use for the journey. Leave time to verify the assembled kennel and help the dog become familiar with it before travel.

Our take

We would get the airline’s requirements for the exact trip before choosing a kennel. The Sky and other rigid travel formats give you specifications to investigate, not advance permission to board.

What to compare

Models discussed in this guide

Research comparisons, not hands-on test results or confirmation that a model fits your dog.

Source prices are shown from lower to higher within each model. Different sizes and configurations are not an exact-SKU savings comparison. Shipping, tax and checkout availability are excluded.

Petmate Vari Kennel

Petmate Vari Kennel

The Vari is one of our starting comparisons for a conventional rigid kennel. It gives you a useful reference point before deciding whether a more specialized travel design is worth the extra planning and cost.

What could make us pass: We would choose between this and the Sky Kennel by the intended job and exact specifications. A familiar travel format does not establish airline acceptance or crash protection.

SportPet Plastic Travel Kennel

SportPet Plastic Travel Kennel

We would investigate this as a rigid travel-format kennel when an ordinary home crate does not suit the job. Start with how it will fit the dog and be handled during the trip.

What could make us pass: If flying is the goal, verify the exact carrier requirements before checkout. Airline wording in a listing is not a substitute for approval for your itinerary.

Petmate Sky Kennel

Petmate Sky Kennel

We would begin an air-travel kennel investigation with the Sky’s exact specifications and the airline’s requirements side by side. That is a useful starting point for a trip-specific decision.

What could make us pass: Do not order solely because the model is associated with flying. The selected size, hardware and current airline requirements still need to line up.
