Kennel buying guide

Best kennels for large dogs

A large-dog kennel should be chosen with measurements, not a breed photograph. Product labels such as Large and Extra Large are not standardized across the brands in this catalog. Compare the actual usable interior and the dog’s ability to enter and settle naturally.

Measure before choosing

Inside space answers “can my dog use it?” Outside space answers “can I put it here?” Both need checking.

  1. Measure nose to tail base, widest body point, and natural standing and sitting height in inches.
  2. Keep usable inside L × W × H separate from complete outside L × W × H; never substitute one for the other.
  3. Record bedding thickness and leave door, ventilation and walking access clear.
  4. Measure standing and upright sitting height; use the larger height when checking headroom.
  5. Confirm usable width near the floor rather than assuming the widest part of a tapered shell is the floor width.

Set up, inspect and clean

Large nominal sizes can conceal narrow floors, sloped walls or intrusive door hardware. Ask for a drawing that identifies the measured locations when the specification is ambiguous.

Questions for this setup

Is a 48-inch label enough information?

No. It may be an outside length or a size name. You still need usable inside length, width and height for the selected version.

What if inside and outside measurements disagree?

Keep the variant out of measured recommendations until the source is resolved. An interior dimension larger than the corresponding exterior dimension is a contradiction.

Can two similarly weighted dogs use the same size?

Possibly, but weight does not show body proportions. Measure each dog rather than transferring a size choice between them.

Large on the label is only the beginning

The enclosure also has to work for the person handling it. A larger wire crate may be manageable when folded but awkward to carry up stairs. A rigid kennel may demand more storage space than expected. Measure the route from delivery to its final location before ordering a bulky item.

Construction deserves a close look, but heavier does not automatically mean appropriate. Inspect latch design, panel connections, floor support and the method for removing the tray. Look for the manufacturer’s intended use and load limits. An advertising claim about strength is not a guarantee against injury during escape attempts.

Our starting comparisons are larger configurations in the MidWest, Frisco and Petmate ranges. The same review can contain prices for several sizes, so the lowest figure may belong to a smaller version. Open the exact size before treating one retailer as cheaper than another, and include delivery and return arrangements in the final decision.

Our take

We would choose from actual usable measurements, then check the floor and access. Large, XL and a long list of breeds are search labels; they do not establish fit for the dog in front of you.

What to compare

Models discussed in this guide

Research comparisons, not hands-on test results or confirmation that a model fits your dog.

Source prices are shown from lower to higher within each model. Different sizes and configurations are not an exact-SKU savings comparison. Shipping, tax and checkout availability are excluded.

MidWest iCrate Single Door

MidWest iCrate Single Door

We would compare the single-door iCrate when the crate will face an open part of the room and stay there. It gives you a direct alternative to paying for a second entrance you may never use.

What could make us pass: Check the selected version’s divider and tray details. The lowest family price may belong to a different size from the one your dog needs.

Petmate Vari Kennel

Petmate Vari Kennel

The Vari is one of our starting comparisons for a conventional rigid kennel. It gives you a useful reference point before deciding whether a more specialized travel design is worth the extra planning and cost.

What could make us pass: We would choose between this and the Sky Kennel by the intended job and exact specifications. A familiar travel format does not establish airline acceptance or crash protection.

MidWest Ultima Pro Double Door

MidWest Ultima Pro Double Door

We would compare the Ultima Pro with a standard double-door MidWest in the same size before deciding to spend more. Door access is a useful shared feature; the specific construction differences need closer inspection.

What could make us pass: Pro and heavy-duty wording do not tell us how it will behave with your dog. Look for a documented difference you need, rather than treating the name as a durability result.

Frisco Heavy Duty Double Door Crate

Frisco Heavy Duty Double Door Crate

This is the Frisco we would investigate when both additional door access and the heavier-duty design are relevant. Compare those two needs separately so you know what any extra cost is buying.

What could make us pass: We would not buy it to solve separation distress. Confirm the exact frame and latch differences from the standard double-door version for an otherwise appropriate crate routine.
