Kennel buying guide

Best kennels for your vehicle

A crate that keeps a dog in one place is not automatically a crash-protective system. For vehicle use, compare the exact kennel model, size, installation method and relevant independent evidence before looking at storage pockets or decorative finishes.

Measure before choosing

Inside space answers “can my dog use it?” Outside space answers “can I put it here?” Both need checking.

  1. Measure nose to tail base, widest body point, and natural standing and sitting height in inches.
  2. Keep usable inside L × W × H separate from complete outside L × W × H; never substitute one for the other.
  3. Record bedding thickness and leave door, ventilation and walking access clear.
  4. Measure the loading opening as well as the space inside the vehicle, including wheel arches and roof slope.
  5. Check the exact kennel, door configuration, attachment hardware and vehicle position against the relevant instructions.

Set up, inspect and clean

A kennel fitting through the hatch is only one part of the decision. Confirm the intended use and attachment system. A home-size comparison does not establish crash protection, and a different size or door configuration may have different evidence.

Questions for this setup

Does a good home fit prove vehicle suitability?

No. Vehicle loading, anchoring and transport evidence are separate checks. The home planner does not approve crash protection.

Which measurements matter in the car?

Check the narrowest loading opening, the complete outside footprint and height, and enough room to operate the door after installation.

Can I transfer a test claim to another size?

Do not assume that a tested configuration covers every size, door or installation. Read the evidence for the exact configuration being considered.

Fit and crash evidence belong in the same decision

Center for Pet Safety currently lists Cabela’s GunDog kennels in Intermediate and Large and Lucky Duck Lucky Kennels in Medium, Intermediate and Large among its certified products. Confirm that the item you select matches the certified version and follow the associated installation requirements. A similar brand name or an unrelated size is not enough.

Measure the vehicle opening as well as the space behind it. Check the door swing with the hatch closed, the usable kennel interior and how you will access the dog. Account for the securing system specified for the kennel. Avoid improvising attachment points simply because the crate happens to fit in the cargo area.

For our catalog, the GunDog and Lucky Duck entries are the first models to investigate against that evidence. RuffLand and Petmate listings may still be useful comparisons for size and design, but a general travel description does not place them in the same certification category. Choose the complete setup that fits the dog and vehicle; do not substitute a cheaper household wire crate on the assumption that all containment offers the same protection.

Our take

We would investigate the exact certified GunDog and Lucky Kennel versions first, then check fit and installation. A kennel that fits the cargo area still needs evidence and a securing plan appropriate to the trip.

What to compare

Models discussed in this guide

Research comparisons, not hands-on test results or confirmation that a model fits your dog.

Source prices are shown from lower to higher within each model. Different sizes and configurations are not an exact-SKU savings comparison. Shipping, tax and checkout availability are excluded.

Petmate Pet Porter Kennel

Petmate Pet Porter Kennel

We would compare the Pet Porter with the Vari when you want a conventional rigid kennel. Let the selected size, access and carrying arrangement decide which belongs in your routine.

What could make us pass: Check the exact transport requirements if that is the intended job. We would not assume Porter in the name establishes airline acceptance or crash protection.

RuffLand Gen II Single Door Kennel

RuffLand Gen II Single Door Kennel

We would investigate this Gen II separately from the Performance listings so the version you buy is clear. For a transport-oriented setup, start with exact interior and installed access measurements.

What could make us pass: Do not merge prices across generations or door layouts. We would verify any safety claim against evidence for the exact model rather than borrow it from the brand.

Cabela’s GunDog Kennel

Cabela’s GunDog Kennel

We would start a vehicle comparison with the GunDog’s exact certified sizes and installation instructions. Independent certification information is a useful reason to investigate this model closely.

What could make us pass: Confirm the version and size before relying on that evidence. We would not apply an Intermediate or Large certification to an unrelated kennel just because the name is similar.

Lucky Duck Dog Kennel

Lucky Duck Dog Kennel

We would put Lucky Kennel on a vehicle shortlist because there is independent certification information to check for specific sizes. That gives us a stronger starting question than a general travel label.

What could make us pass: Confirm that the selected version and size match the certified product and its installation requirements. We would not extend that evidence to every Lucky Duck kennel listing.
