Record three different measurements

Keep separate fields for a single panel, the assembled outside footprint and the clear interior in the chosen shape. Add the door opening and door swing. If a source does not identify which measurement it supplies, mark it unresolved rather than guessing.

Do not multiply a bounding box blindly

A hexagonal pen can fit inside a sixty-by-sixty-inch square without enclosing all twenty-five square feet of that square. The corners outside the pen are not usable. A dimensioned layout or direct interior measurement is needed to calculate the actual enclosed area.

Account for the furnished space

Put bedding and water into the proposed layout and measure what remains. A narrow rectangle with the same area as a wider shape may offer less convenient turning room. Check the dog’s comfortable resting posture and movement, then preserve a route for cleaning.

Handle conflicting specifications
