Measure the opening itself

Panel height does not tell you the doorway’s clear width or threshold. Check both against the person and dog using it. For a tall pen, convenient human access can determine whether cleaning is manageable.

Reserve the swing

A hinged door needs room on its opening side. Include that space when planning the outside footprint. Keep bowls and bedding clear of the moving leaf and leave an unobstructed approach.

Check operation from both sides

Look at how the latch is reached and whether it can be operated from inside the enclosure. Follow the maker’s instructions rather than modifying a latch for convenience. Compare the actual mechanism when products have similar names.

Separate passage from walk-through
