Square, rectangle or octagon: shape changes usable space

Use geometry as an illustration

Imagine eight ideal two-foot panels with no thickness. A square made with two panels on each side has sixteen square feet. A regular octagon from the same perimeter has about nineteen-point-three square feet. These are geometry examples, not verified measurements of a product.

Distinguish area from bounding width

An octagon fits inside a larger bounding square, but the square’s corners are outside the pen. Multiplying the outermost width and length would overstate enclosed space. Actual hinges and feet add further differences.

Test the furnished arrangement

A bed may fit more neatly along a straight rectangular wall, while angled corners can make furniture placement awkward. Preserve turning room and access to water. Choose the shape that works after the contents are placed.

Respect the allowed configurations

Only use layouts permitted by the product’s instructions. A calculation does not show whether joints lock at the needed angle or whether the assembled shape is stable on the intended surface.
