Best dog kennels for the Ford Escape

An Escape guide should begin with the vehicle you own, not the largest cargo number in a sales brochure.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Ford Escape’s layout

An Escape guide should begin with the vehicle you own, not the largest cargo number in a sales brochure. Different generations and powertrains can package the rear area differently. Record the model year, then measure the area behind the rear seats while those seats are set for your passengers. That is the useful starting envelope for an everyday kennel.

Check floor height, the width between the rear trim panels and the inward slope of the closed liftgate. A kennel can sit on the floor yet still interfere with the glass or upper trim as the hatch closes. Keep the cargo liner and anything stored under the floor in your plan; a permanently installed kennel can make routine access inconvenient.

If passengers and a kennel compete for the same space, write down which seat arrangement you can keep for the entire trip. Folding a seat for loading and then discovering it cannot return upright defeats the plan. Try the exterior dimensions in cardboard, check the dog’s interior requirements separately, and leave room for water stops and latch access without unloading every bag.

The checks that matter here

Kennels we would compare for the Ford Escape

For one dog, a single-door RuffLand is a sensible configuration to investigate because you can reserve the rear opening for loading and leave a separate luggage area. A Gunner G1 is another comparison candidate when the dog-appropriate size leaves enough room for its prescribed installation. We would not select either by an “intermediate” or “medium” label without measuring the actual version.

A rear-facing single door can keep Escape loading simple while you reserve a separate space for luggage beside the kennel.

When we would pass: Reject a shell whose upper corners meet the liftgate once the passengers’ normal seat positions are restored.

Worth comparing when the Escape seat position you actually use leaves room for the dog-appropriate shell and its instructed securing arrangement.

When we would pass: If the enclosure covers supplies you need under the floor, decide whether frequent removal is realistic.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
