Research-based shortlist, not a verified-fit list. Confirm your model year, body style, trim and seat layout before buying.
This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.
Start with your Volkswagen Taos’s layout
Taos research needs one detail that is easy to omit: front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Volkswagen publishes different luggage capacities for the two layouts. Those volume figures do not give kennel dimensions, but they are a clear reason not to assume another Taos owner’s cargo measurements apply to yours.
With the rear seats in use, trace the actual floor and then check the space above it at kennel height. The width visible at the hatch need not be the width farther forward. Leave the cargo mat in place so a raised edge does not appear later as an obstacle to the kennel door.
For a small dog, compare the practical cost of a rear-seat carrier with dedicating the cargo area to an enclosure. A carrier may leave the shopping space intact but uses a seat and requires the prescribed belt route. A cargo kennel retains seats only if the correct dog size can be installed behind them.
The Taos buying test should include a normal errand load, not just the dog equipment. If bags can only sit against the kennel’s ventilation or prevent opening its door, the packing plan needs revision. Give the seller the drivetrain, model year and those complete measurements before discussing a specific size.
The checks that matter here
- FWD or AWD cargo layout
- Interior width beyond the hatch opening
- Shopping load with kennel door usable
Kennels we would compare for the Volkswagen Taos
Shortlist a rear-entry kennel only after measuring the exact drivetrain version.
RuffLand single-door kennel

A compact dog-appropriate RuffLand can be investigated for a seats-up layout with a clear rear entrance.
When we would pass: Do not select a smaller interior merely to keep room for shopping.

Gunner G1

Compare G1 against the same full-height Taos template, with mat and luggage included.
When we would pass: A fit report that omits drivetrain or passenger arrangement is insufficient evidence.

Sleepypod Air — small-dog seat alternative

A seat-installed Sleepypod Air is an alternative for a small dog when shopping space is more useful than one rear passenger position.
When we would pass: Do not use a rear seat needed by a passenger or choose the carrier before confirming the dog fits its interior guidance.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.
Before you order
Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.
Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
