Best dog kennels for the Volkswagen Atlas

The Atlas guide starts with third-row passengers; the two-row Atlas Cross Sport is a separate fit problem.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Volkswagen Atlas’s layout

For an Atlas carrying the full family, start behind the occupied third row rather than with the largest cargo number in the brochure. Folding that row creates a different vehicle-use plan. Decide which plan the dog needs to share before looking at kennel sizes or another owner’s installation.

Keep Atlas Cross Sport photographs out of the fit comparison. It is a different two-row body, despite the shared Atlas name. Ask for the exact model and seat arrangement when a seller or owner says a kennel fits an Atlas; that short description leaves the most important packaging question unanswered.

If the third row can remain folded, a single rear-entry kennel is the simplest arrangement to investigate. For two dogs, place both full-height shells in the plan at once. Door swings, securing hardware and the luggage remaining beside them can rule out a pair even when each enclosure fits alone.

An Atlas used for carpools also needs a removal plan. Test carrying the empty kennel out without dragging it across seat controls, and decide where it will stay when the third row returns. That repeated conversion can be the deciding tradeoff between two otherwise plausible products, particularly when the family changes passenger count from one day to the next.

The checks that matter here

Kennels we would compare for the Volkswagen Atlas

Choose a seats-up or third-row-folded use case before comparing kennel brands.

A single rear door can keep a one-dog Atlas arrangement straightforward when the third row stays folded.

When we would pass: For two dogs, check both shells and doors together; individual fits are not enough.

Compare G1 if the selected passenger arrangement can remain unchanged throughout the trip.

When we would pass: Account for lifting and storing the empty kennel when the Atlas returns to carpool duty.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
