This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.
Start with your Nissan Altima’s layout
The Altima's sedan layout makes the rear passenger compartment the starting point for dog travel. Its separate trunk is for luggage, not an occupied carrier. Before looking at kennel dimensions, choose the passenger seat that can remain available and confirm that a product's specified vehicle installation works there.
For a small dog, compare the Sleepypod Air and Mobile Pet Bed by the dog's body dimensions rather than by the car's overall size. Their different footprints matter on a shaped rear seat. A carrier that rests across an unsupported gap or forces an awkward belt path should come off the list even if the rear door closes.
The Altima's longer body does not automatically solve the loading problem of a rigid crate. The opening between the rear door, roof and front seat can be the limiting factor. Test the complete carrier envelope, including protruding handles, and check that the person loading the dog can open the carrier without leaning across another passenger.
If a larger dog cannot use an appropriately sized carrier here, investigate a suitable vehicle restraint rather than trying a home crate in the trunk or footwell. Do not transfer an installation from a different Altima generation without rechecking. After a trial fit, make sure normal passenger seating, driver comfort and access to the seat belts are still intact.
The checks that matter here
- Rear-seat carrier support and belt routing
- Rear doorway including roof clearance
- Driver and passenger seats in normal positions
Kennels we would compare for the Nissan Altima
A small-dog carrier with a documented seat-belt installation is our first path for the Altima. A conventional cargo kennel is not automatically the right answer.
Sleepypod Air

Try Air’s rectangular shape on the Altima rear cushion and through its doorway; overall sedan length does not settle the loading turn.
When we would pass: A long rear cabin does not guarantee that the carrier can rotate through the Altima’s doorway.

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

Assess the Mobile Pet Bed as a separate shape when its round base can sit supported without covering a neighboring buckle.
When we would pass: Compare the round base on the actual seat; keep neighboring buckles and seating positions usable.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.
Before you order
Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.
Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
