Best dog kennels for the Subaru Crosstrek

The Crosstrek combines hatchback-style packaging with an outdoor-oriented layout, so height can become a constraint before floor length does.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Subaru Crosstrek’s layout

The Crosstrek combines hatchback-style packaging with an outdoor-oriented layout, so height can become a constraint before floor length does. A crate that looks right on the cargo floor may still collide with the closed hatch. Measure the narrow entrance and the installed position separately.

For a Crosstrek used after muddy walks, include the liner and the dog’s loading routine in the measurement. A raised liner edge can interfere with a low kennel door even if the shell clears the hatch. Put cleanup supplies where you can reach them without setting loose bags in the dog’s exit path.

Roof-mounted outdoor equipment does not solve the rear-cabin layout. Keep the seats needed by passengers in use and compare the closed-glass clearance at the far end of the kennel. An angled shell is worth examining as a geometry choice, but its name or outdoor branding cannot establish a Crosstrek fit.

The checks that matter here

Kennels we would compare for the Subaru Crosstrek

A compact RuffLand layout is the first kennel configuration to investigate, with a suitable Gunner G1 as a comparison where dimensions permit. Preserve the required interior room for the dog rather than choosing solely by cargo fit.

Test a rear-facing entrance with the liner and cleanup equipment still in place, including door clearance over the hatch sill.

When we would pass: Reject this layout if hatch opening height cannot accommodate the dog-appropriate shell and a usable entrance.

Gunner G1

Assess G1 at the closed-glass boundary with the normal liner fitted, preserving space to reach cleanup supplies after a wet walk.

When we would pass: The deciding trial includes cargo depth with required rear-seat use. A floor-only fit does not resolve that constraint.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
