This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.
Start with your Subaru Outback’s layout
For an Outback, distinguish the model year before relying on another owner’s photos. The 2025 wagon and redesigned 2026 model should not share an assumed fit. Floor depth can look generous while the closed hatch limits the height at the far end of the kennel.
An Outback owner often wants to retain a long luggage area alongside the dog. Lay out the kennel and the actual outdoor equipment together, including anything that extends toward the rear seats. Do not let a cooler occupy the only route to a kennel latch or use luggage to wedge the shell in place.
Compare the installed roof of the kennel with the closed hatch, especially when using information from a different Outback generation. A floor-length measurement does not capture the tapered space above it. If a second door faces into the cabin, check whether the seat arrangement leaves enough room to use it without moving the kennel.
The checks that matter here
- 2025 or redesigned 2026 body
- Closed hatch at the kennel rear corners
- Rear-seat position and clear loading path
Kennels we would compare for the Subaru Outback
Compare a dog-sized RuffLand, including alternate door arrangements where useful, with a suitable Gunner G1. Favor a setup that preserves hatch clearance and access to essentials without stacking loose luggage against the kennel.
RuffLand single-door kennel

Compare a rear-entry installation with the Outback’s long equipment separately restrained and clear of the kennel doorway.
When we would pass: Reject this layout if 2025 or redesigned 2026 body cannot accommodate the dog-appropriate shell and a usable entrance.

Gunner G1

Compare the G1 roof against the Outback’s closed hatch and keep long equipment restrained clear of its entrance and ventilation.
When we would pass: The deciding trial includes rear-seat position and clear loading path. A floor-only fit does not resolve that constraint.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.
Before you order
Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.
Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
