This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.
Start with your Toyota Tacoma’s layout
Tacoma owners should start with the cab and powertrain. A midsize pickup does not provide the same kennel options as a full-size crew cab, and equipment can change the rear-cabin storage layout. Decide whether an in-cab kennel works before shopping by the advertised truck-bed dimensions.
Do not treat a Tacoma with a different cab as a scaled version of yours. Establish whether your rear area is a passenger space at all, then check the seat and storage instructions for that specific truck. An apparent platform in an owner photo may be an aftermarket conversion rather than a factory surface.
For trail trips, reserve cabin space for people before allocating room to the dog. Recovery gear can travel elsewhere only with its own restraint plan; it should not be wedged around the kennel as support. A short loading trial through the real doorway is more useful than comparing your truck bed with another owner’s kennel dimensions.
The checks that matter here
- Cab style and rear-seat availability
- Rear-door opening and turn-in room
- Interior footprint with necessary passengers
Kennels we would compare for the Toyota Tacoma
Compare compact RuffLand and Gunner options only after measuring the cabin and sizing the dog. If neither meets both requirements, use a suitable in-cab restraint or a different travel arrangement.
RuffLand single-door kennel

Start with a compact cabin candidate only after establishing the Tacoma’s cab, actual rear area and supported installation position.
When we would pass: Reject this layout if cab style and rear-seat availability cannot accommodate the dog-appropriate shell and a usable entrance.

Gunner G1

A G1 is a conditional cabin candidate only when the dog-sized shell fits the Tacoma’s actual rear support area and loading doorway.
When we would pass: The deciding trial includes interior footprint with necessary passengers. A floor-only fit does not resolve that constraint.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.
Before you order
Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.
Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
