Best dog kennels for the Mazda CX-5

Start with the generation: Mazda changed both the loading opening and cargo floor for the redesigned 2026 CX-5.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Mazda CX-5’s layout

The CX-5’s redesign makes the year the first useful kennel filter. Mazda describes the 2026 model as having a larger liftgate opening and a lower load floor than its predecessor. Those changes can make loading easier, but they also mean a photograph of a kennel in a 2025 CX-5 is not a measurement for the newer vehicle.

For the redesigned model, the 40:20:40 rear bench lets you consider different passenger-and-equipment layouts. Keep the seats needed by people upright. Folding the narrow center section for long gear does not automatically provide a supported place for a kennel or leave a usable door into it.

We would compare a rear-entry RuffLand with a dog-appropriate G1 using the actual seats-up cargo envelope first. A lower loading edge can help you lift an empty enclosure, but the kennel still has to clear the opening at its widest point and leave room for the prescribed installation.

For an older dog, rehearse entry separately from the empty-kennel trial. Check the step from the vehicle sill into the kennel and where a ramp would meet the opening. That everyday boarding routine is the deciding detail if the two candidate shells both pass the geometry check.

The checks that matter here

Kennels we would compare for the Mazda CX-5

Compare rear-loading shells with your normal seats retained; choose only after a boarding trial.

The lower loading edge on the redesigned model makes a rear-entry layout worth testing, with the actual mat and kennel-door swing included.

When we would pass: Do not infer clearance in an older CX-5 from the redesigned opening.

Gunner G1

Consider a G1 when its complete shell can be lifted into position and the specified installation leaves the dog an uncomplicated entry.

When we would pass: Pass if a workable ramp approach or latch reach disappears after installation.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
