Best dog kennels for the Honda Odyssey

The Odyssey offers several seat arrangements, but its sliding, removable and stowing seats must be planned separately before choosing a kennel.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Honda Odyssey’s layout

The Odyssey’s seat flexibility makes a dog-sized GUNNER G1 or RuffLand Intermediate worth comparing, particularly when you can dedicate space behind the second row. Start with the dog’s required interior dimensions rather than the van’s apparent capacity. Neither kennel is guaranteed to fit or mount correctly. A useful Odyssey layout also preserves the sliding-door entry and passenger seats your household regularly uses.

Honda’s current Odyssey describes Magic Slide second-row seats that move sideways, with seats designed to fold for removal, plus a third-row Magic Seat that stows into the floor. These are different operations, and they create different floor layouts. Decide which configuration you will actually maintain before measuring. Do not assume that shifting a chair sideways creates an approved or sufficiently supported place for a kennel.

Check both possible loading routes: through the rear hatch with the third row stowed, and through a sliding door in your chosen seat arrangement. Include floor hardware, remaining seat mounts and any changes in level. A kennel door facing a sliding door may be convenient at the curb, but only if the kennel can be secured in that orientation according to its instructions. Seat attachment hardware is not automatically a kennel attachment system.

Run the trial with your usual passengers, stroller and bags. Keep a clear path to occupied seats and leave room to clip the dog’s leash before opening the kennel. If you remove seats for the installation, follow Honda’s procedure and plan where those seats will be stored; a setup that needs constant rebuilding may not suit school-day use. The best choice is the one that remains properly supported and secured in your normal family configuration.

Worth measuring when a sliding-door approach might improve curb-side access to the kennel.

When we would pass: Confirm the door faces: an extra opening against a retained seat is not an alternate loading route.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
