This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Ford Expedition’s layout

An Expedition offers several distinct kennel layouts, and the useful one depends on your passengers. Start by identifying the standard-length body or Expedition MAX, the model year and whether the third row must remain available. The large maximum cargo figure describes a seat arrangement that may not match a family trip with every passenger aboard.

Measure behind the last occupied row, then work through the route into that space. Check the rear opening, the closed liftgate and any split-gate arrangement on your vehicle. Leave room to release the kennel latch without leaning across loose luggage. An older Expedition and a newer one can have different cargo floors and opening hardware, so transfer neither a mock-up nor a fit report without checking.

The temptation in a large SUV is to fill every remaining gap. Instead, give luggage its own restraint plan and preserve ventilation and a usable route to the dogs. A second kennel door may be helpful when a folded-seat layout provides another access point. If the third row must return for school runs, consider how often you can realistically lift out and reinstall the chosen kennel.

The checks that matter here

Kennels we would compare for the Ford Expedition

For a dog that can travel in one kennel behind the occupied seats, compare Gunner G1 and RuffLand single-door configurations as separate full installations. If you need two kennels, place both exterior mock-ups together and include their door swings. Two boxes that each fit alone do not establish that the pair can be loaded, secured and opened together.

A single rear-facing door keeps the Expedition loading route direct when you retain the passenger seats needed for family trips.

When we would pass: For two kennels, test both door swings together rather than assuming two individually successful fits make a usable pair.

A candidate for an Expedition installation with occupied seats; for two dogs, test two complete mock-ups together with both door swings and securing hardware.

When we would pass: An Expedition MAX installation cannot establish the remaining cargo depth in the standard-length body.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
