Best dog kennels for the Volvo XC90

Available lowering suspension can help XC90 boarding, but it does not enlarge the kennel space inside.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Volvo XC90’s layout

An XC90 with available level control can lower its rear for loading. That can change the dog’s approach from the ground, but it does not increase the floor-to-roof envelope around the kennel. Keep boarding height and interior fit as two separate tests when evaluating the same product.

Decide which rear rows remain occupied before measuring. If a seat moves or folds, follow the year-specific instructions and confirm that it locks in its final position. A kennel that depends on an incompletely returned seat is not a repeatable family-travel arrangement.

For a dog using a ramp, rehearse the approach at the suspension setting you actually use in your parking routine. Include the ramp’s stored location and a way to reach the kennel latch without stretching over baggage. A lower sill alone does not resolve the step into a kennel with its own raised entrance.

Compare RuffLand and G1 in the chosen seat configuration with both the loading and driving positions understood. Where the third row comes back into service regularly, consider the removal effort before selecting a shell. The successful XC90 arrangement should support both the dog’s boarding needs and the household’s real passenger schedule.

The checks that matter here

Kennels we would compare for the Volvo XC90

Evaluate boarding assistance separately from shell clearance and the retained passenger rows.

A rear-entry RuffLand is worth testing with the ramp and actual loading-height setting.

When we would pass: Lowering the vehicle cannot compensate for a kennel that is too tall inside.

Gunner G1

Compare G1 after checking its full installation with the rear seats properly locked.

When we would pass: Factor in removal effort if the third row returns to frequent passenger use.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
