This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.
Start with your Toyota RAV4’s layout
The RAV4 is a useful starting point for a cargo-area kennel, but the space behind the rear seats is the space that matters when family members ride along. A maximum cargo-volume figure with the seats folded will not tell you whether a rigid kennel fits your everyday arrangement.
For a RAV4 used for both errands and weekends away, draw two zones on the cargo-floor plan: the full kennel installation and the bags you actually carry. A kennel that fills the width may leave no sensible place for a suitcase. Try the trip load before paying for an extra kennel door that luggage would block.
Treat a change of generation or powertrain as a fresh measurement exercise. Keep the rear seatbacks at their normal recline and check the distance to the hatch at kennel-roof height. For this layout, our preference is a reachable rear entrance and repeatable packing, rather than the largest enclosure the empty cargo area appears to accept.
The checks that matter here
- Hatch opening height at its narrowest point
- Depth behind normally positioned rear seats
- Closed-hatch clearance above the kennel
Kennels we would compare for the Toyota RAV4
For an everyday RAV4 shortlist, start with a single-door RuffLand and compare a suitable Gunner G1 size. A second door is useful only if you can actually reach it in the installed position.
RuffLand single-door kennel

A single rear entrance is worth comparing when the RAV4 retains its rear passengers and the bags have a separate position beside the kennel.
When we would pass: Reject this layout if hatch opening height at its narrowest point cannot accommodate the dog-appropriate shell and a usable entrance.

Gunner G1

A G1 can be compared in the RAV4 after reserving a separate suitcase position and setting the rear seatbacks to their normal recline.
When we would pass: The deciding trial includes closed-hatch clearance above the kennel. A floor-only fit does not resolve that constraint.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.
Before you order
Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.
Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
