Best dog kennels for the Hyundai Kona

The Kona needs a precise fit exercise: compare a small-pet seat carrier with a cargo kennel only when the dog and installation requirements support it.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Hyundai Kona’s layout

The Kona calls for a compact and specific shortlist. A Sleepypod Air can be worth investigating for a small dog in a permitted seating position; a dog-sized GUNNER G1 is a separate cargo-area candidate only if its full dimensions and restraint system work. Neither is a promised Kona fit. The choice depends on the dog’s size and whether you need to preserve the rear seats for passengers.

Start with your model year and powertrain rather than borrowing a fit report from any vehicle labeled Kona. The current shape differs from earlier examples, and equipment can affect the usable cargo layout. Hyundai lists a split-folding rear seat with recline on current configurations. Set that seat in the position you actually use before measuring, since changing the backrest angle can change the available space behind it.

For a rigid cargo kennel, measure the hatch aperture, width between the interior obstructions and clearance beneath the closing hatch at the shell’s highest point. Then test the loading maneuver with a mock-up. A compact crossover’s floor can accommodate a rectangle that cannot be turned through its opening. If folding a seat is necessary, confirm that the resulting surface supports the kennel as its maker requires.

For a seat-installed small-pet carrier, check the specified belt route and buckle access with the front seat and any adjacent child restraint in their normal positions. Whichever arrangement you choose, leave room for your regular bags without pressing them against ventilation panels. The most useful Kona installation is easy to repeat on daily journeys, so do not accept a setup that requires rearranging passengers or compromising the dog’s required space at every stop.

A small-pet option when a compatible Kona seating position offers a more workable installation than the cargo area.

When we would pass: A small-dog carrier is not an alternative for a dog outside its interior-size limits, regardless of available seats.

GUNNER G1 — select size for your dog

Compare a dog-appropriate size only if the Kona’s cargo opening and supported floor accommodate the complete installation.

When we would pass: Check the generation before applying cargo dimensions; the Kona name alone is insufficient.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
