Research-based shortlist, not a verified-fit list. Confirm your model year, body style, trim and seat layout before buying.
This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.
Start with your GMC Terrain’s layout
The Terrain is a two-row SUV, so the useful kennel question is usually how to preserve passenger seats while using the rear cargo area. Begin with your own model year and rear-seat arrangement. A newer Terrain’s specification or photograph should not be treated as a fit template for an earlier generation, especially around the floor and hatch opening.
Measure the floor behind the upright seats and then measure again at the proposed kennel’s shoulder height. Interior trim and the hatch slope can narrow the envelope above the floor. Keep underfloor storage access in mind: placing a secured kennel over a compartment may mean unloading it whenever you need the contents. That is a convenience tradeoff worth deciding before purchase.
If you plan to fold part of the rear bench, preserve the adjacent passenger’s space and check the surface beneath the kennel rather than assuming it is level. Test your packed arrangement with a full-size exterior template, including protruding handles and latch access. Leave space for the supplies you actually carry, and do not let luggage turn an otherwise accessible kennel into a box you cannot open at a stop.
The checks that matter here
- Model year and rear-seat position
- Upper trim and closed-hatch clearance
- Underfloor storage access beneath the planned kennel
Kennels we would compare for the GMC Terrain
A single-door RuffLand is a practical configuration to investigate for one clear rear-loading route. A dog-appropriate Gunner G1 belongs on the comparison list when its full exterior shell and instructed securing arrangement can be accommodated. We would not begin by choosing the largest kennel the cargo area can hold; interior suitability for the dog and a usable installation come first.
RuffLand single-door kennel

Investigate for one clear rear-loading route in the Terrain, measuring with the actual seatback position and cargo accessories in place.
When we would pass: A floor-width match is insufficient if trim or the hatch narrows the space at the shell’s shoulder height.

Gunner G1

Compare the complete G1 shell against the Terrain hatch opening and closed-hatch clearance before selecting a size suitable for the dog.
When we would pass: Think through the loss of underfloor access before choosing a kennel that will remain strapped in all week.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.
Before you order
Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.
Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
