Best dog kennels for the Honda Pilot

Start with the Pilot’s required passenger count: a kennel behind the second row and one behind an occupied third row are different proposals.

This guide builds on our general guide to choosing the best kennel for your vehicle. Start there for the overall approach, or change vehicles with the selector below.

Start with your Honda Pilot’s layout

For the Honda Pilot, compare a dog-sized GUNNER G1 and RuffLand Intermediate once you know whether the third row will be occupied. With that row folded, a cargo kennel may be worth investigating; with a full complement of passengers, the remaining area needs a separate assessment. Neither product is a confirmed Pilot fit. Your specific year, seating arrangement and dog determine whether the proposed setup is sensible.

Do not borrow measurements from the Passport simply because both vehicles are Honda SUVs. The Pilot’s third-row role changes the floor plan and passenger-access requirements. Put the second-row seats in the positions your passengers need, including their normal recline, before measuring. If your trim has a removable or adjustable seating component, consult the vehicle manual rather than assuming that every Pilot provides the same conversion.

Use the closed hatch as the rear boundary of your measurement, including the inward slope of its upper trim. Check that a folded seat surface supports the kennel as required and that straps can follow the kennel maker’s specified route. The shell also has to pass through the opening: trace its loading path with cardboard before ordering a heavy rigid crate. A fit on the floor does not prove a fit through the door.

Families should rehearse access with the kennel in position. Can a passenger reach the third row when you need it, and can you reach the dog without unloading everything? Keep sports equipment and luggage restrained away from the kennel door. If the proposed installation interferes with passenger access or cannot be secured as instructed, choose another arrangement rather than relying on the kennel’s weight to hold it in place.

The checks that matter here

Kennels we would compare for the Honda Pilot

Choose the dog-sized kennel only after checking its loading path, support and restraints in the intended three-row layout.

Worth evaluating with the Pilot’s third row folded when that reflects your normal family trips.

When we would pass: If the third row must remain occupied, recheck the remaining cargo depth rather than using a folded-row result.

Compare the exact shell and door arrangement behind the Pilot seats you intend to retain.

When we would pass: A removable-seat or aisle arrangement only helps when it remains usable with your actual child seats installed.

These are candidates to investigate, not confirmed fits. Match the exact size and installation instructions to your dog and vehicle before ordering.

Before you order

Use the main guide’s dog-sizing and loading-route checklist to test your chosen layout. Review how to check crash-test evidence for the exact product and installation; a successful physical fit does not establish crash protection.

Bring your dog’s measurements, your model year and trim, and photos of the intended installation area to the kennel seller. Ask for the exterior envelope and usable interior measurements of the exact size and door configuration. Confirm the return terms before a trial fit.
